Fungal infections are common in the community. Infection in nails causes them to become discoloured, brittle and crumbly.
Infection can spread to skin on hands, feet or the body and passed on to other family members. Conventional over the counter creams or prescription paints and tablets are not always successful.
Overseas centres have reported successful eradication of nail fungal infection with NdYag laser treatment. It is thought that heat generated in the nail plate and underlying nail bed as pulses of laser light energy are applied to the nail destroys microscopic fungal structures and spores. New nail growth pushes out the old and damaged nail.
This is a useful new treatment option for people who prefer not to take oral medicines.
